Detective Comics #36
This copy of Detective Comics #36 is what is commonly known as a newstand return. The top logo was stripped by the news-vendor and returned to the distributors for a credit. What the news-vendor might do is then sell the book at a discount or give them away. Since comics were considered disposable, the stripping of the logo was never a gentle process and this copy also had the first 2 folios cut (although not torn out). To begin, I removed the cover and infilled the missing piece of the front cover with sympathetic paper. I then spot-cast (a form of leaf-casting) the two interior folios that had been cut. This provided a layer of paper on which I could recreate the damaged artwork on the interior panels. All missing and damaged areas of the cover were then recreated including the recreation of all the text ads on the inside front cover. The infilled areas of the cover were then recoated, the final book was refolded and pressed. The owner of the book sent the finished work to CBCS for grading and they gave the book a final grade of 8.5!
