Ever since its creation in the 1950's, adhesive tape has been used to repair documents. Over time, the adhesive in tape ages and ultimately damages the underlyign document it was meant to help. Once adhesive tape is removed, further repair is often necessary (such as reinforcement of any loose pieces and possibly bleaching of the remaining adhesive stains).
